The indigenous fruits and berries in this land seem too small
and fiddly for our standards.

Our standards are dictated to by a lifestyle that leaves very little
time to devote to hunting and gathering
(as noble, worthwhile, and educational an activity as is typing in front
of computer monitors or building machines).

Apples, oranges and the other European greengroceries
were probably as small as Australian wild fruits to start off with.
Selective breeding led to the current shapes and sizes.
Makes the "all natural" propaganda of Organic Food stores sound naive
doesn't it?
The wild fruits could be just as feasible a mass crop
if the same attention is paid.
